However, to answer your question; there is not really a difference, but back in the day you never were able to charge through the same port and play at the same time. The above circuit allowed for the portable to be powered from AC wall power whilst another charger (usually a lithium ion smart charger) charged the batteries, allowing for “charge and play”. This is now redundant with the introduction of newer BQ chips that allow playing and charging through the same port.
