Solved Wii Trim - Issue with 1.8v and 3.3v not outputting

Hey there,

I’ve been working on an Ashida and recently trimmed my motherboard and have been having issues getting it to start.

Currently, when I try to start the Wii, I feel it getting warm but when I tested it with my multimeter while the Wii was powered on, I was not getting any current from 3.3 V or 1.8 V.

I tried testing the resistances on just the Wii, and just the PMS-2 and am getting a current from them both on their own (~8.5k for 3.3v and 36 for 1.8v) respectively. It just seems to be when the Wii is turned on that the issue is happening.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this issue? Thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to look at my post! Unfortunately, adding the second cell doesn’t seem to have done the trick. I am still having the same issue.
 
Your 1.8v via going from the regulator to the resistor is broken I don’t know if that’s the issue tho.

Nah that won't be the problem. With the LDO removed those resistors don't do anything
I’ll also add that I originally hadn’t removed the LDO and was still getting no current from 1.8V with the Wii powered on.

I thought maybe something was shorting underneath it so after seeing Wesk’s video on removing it without hot air, I went ahead and took it out thinking it may solve the issue. That leaves me at where I was when posting this.
 
As far as I can see you haven't made any of the obvious mistakes that would cause boot failure. I would grab a sharp blade and trim off those lifted video traces on the top face tho

Will do. Would it be helpful if I took some more pictures in different spots?
 
I don't think so, the photos you already provided are well framed and have great clarity.

So you said you checked the outputs on the PMS with the Wii disconnected and all lines were outputting the correct voltages?

I believe that when I checked, the Wii was still connected, but not powered on. I will check with everything disconnected next.
 
That would be best. Having a PMS connected changes the resistance values of the voltage lines, so they need to be measured separately first. Once the PMS is confirmed to be outputting the correct voltages and the Wii is confirmed to have not developed any shorts, then we'll have a better focus on what further troubleshooting can be done.

So ironically after measuring my resistances again with nothing hooked up to the Wii, my 1.8v and 3.3v lines seem to be mostly correct values. It's actually when the 1v and 1.15v lines are introduced that things are measuring low, and the 1v and 1.15v currents on their own that are measuring low. I'll attach a picture of all of my readings.

I also measured my PMS2 with nothing hooked up to it. I measured it on the 20M setting and got these values when measuring with ground:
1v .17
1.15v .19
1.8v .30
3.3v .46

How are you measuring current?
 
You need to use the DC voltage setting for that. Black probe on GND, red probe the output pad while the PMS is active

Well, I think we found the problem. My PMS2 isn’t outputting any voltage from the 3.3v line.

When I measured each current, I got:
1.01v for 1v, 1.159v for 1.15v, 1.815v for 1.8v,
and a whopping 0 for 3.3v. I tried testing from a few different ground points, turned it off and on again and measured after that, and it still always read nothing for 3.3v.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get my PMS exchanged.. I’ve been so careful with that thing with the fear of this exact thing happening.

Based off of the Wii resistances, do you suspect I’ll need a new Wii too?
 
The resistances look alright. Assuming nothing else is wrong with the Wii, it *should* work with all proper voltages supplied.
