Worklog Kawaii

I'm absolutely in love with this project. The Wii is my favourite console of all time so I can only follow this closely!

Will there be a possibility to buy all the PCBs that goes inside the shell some day? Or should I try to buy a fifth Wii and try to trim it?

Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

You can purchase some of the PCBs, like Thundervolt, AVEflex, and nandFlex on my store. I have no plans to sell the other PCBs or complete kits.

This has been mentioned before, but Kawaii is not a good first Wii project. I'd check out the Noldendo instead and work your way up.

My trip to China to procure the shells has been delayed to mid-August. If you preordered a shell, you can expect it to be shipped by the end of August.

Just ordered the last Kawaii- in red. Thanks for doing this group buy, Yveltal! I wasn't originally planning on ever making a Kawaii, but the $25 dollar price point is hard to say no to. It might be a while before I actually work on it, but I can't wait to share my build on here eventually!

Hey, I was wondering what tool one would need to build it.
Here's an incredibly simplified list of things you need to start. There's not going to be a guide or anything though, so just look through this worklog to see some of the process that goes into building it, and from there you can figure out what you need. This is not however a good first portable build, as something like the Ashida, Noldendo, or one of the Xii-Boys would be a much better first build.

Just seen the preorder is out of stock. Any ideas if/when there will be another order?

There probably won't be another one soon, but it all depends on who's interested in another order. The way they got the price to be $25 dollars is not only Yveltal making a trip to China, but also a large number of people saying that they would want to buy the shell, and larger productions is individually a lot cheaper. There was mentions of there being a possible copper or silver Kawaii, but I think it was all said pretty jokingly.

A very limited number of Kawaii shells are available for preorder on my store, Flashfire.

These are empty aluminum housings only— no Wii, no PCBs, no screws, no dock.

Shells are expected to be picked up the first weekend of August and shipped to buyers the following week. Please do not order a shell if you're unwilling to wait!

Due to the 95% tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from China, this group buy is a rare opportunity for community members to purchase shells at a reasonable price. So please be conscientious and refrain from ordering a shell if you have never trimmed a Wii or don't intend to build a Kawaii. Thanks!

Interested in 1 of the shells if another run is done in the future. Preferably cyan but any color is fine.

These shells all look amazing! Almost makes me wish I picked one up. One of these days I'll need to make one of my own mini Wii consoles. Awesome stuff as always dude!

I also want to make a kawaii,But this is too difficult for me:rothink:
Who knows, maybe over time with practice you'll have enough skill to do so! If you just want a Kawaii to have one though, I'll be selling mine in the future as I have no functional need for one, so let me know if you'd be interested!

I would be very interested in buying! :awesome:

Amazing work, that is incredible ! I built a few Ashidas and I am very interested in building one or more Kawaii.
Unfortunately I am a bit late and shells are sold out, will there be restock one day ?
So, I am placing it here, if there is a restock, I will buy several shells so please notify me :)

I'm back from China! I was there for work and took the opportunity to travel to Suzhou to meet @Ding, see his shop, and pay for the Kawaii shells.

Sincere thanks to @Ding and his wife for all their hard work manufacturing these. You guys are awesome and true artists. <3

Also, thank you to everyone who placed a preorder! Shells will begin shipping tomorrow. It's going to take a few days to get all ~40 orders sent out.

For future orders, I encouraged Ding to consider selling the shells directly on AliExpress or Taobao.

These are beautiful! Almost makes me wish I would've bought one. Maybe down the road I will...

A @Wesk and Yveltal collaboration!

Last summer, while Wesk was developing the Final Destination OMEGA, he and I discussed creating a Wii micro build even smaller than the GC Nano.

The first build to ever FULLY utilize the OMEGA trim. The smallest functional Wii ever made, barely larger than the outline of the OMEGA trim itself. A literal keychain Wii!

Back then, I was imagining a more traditional form factor, with a fan, 5mm heatsink, controller ports, and micro-HDMI out. Here are some of my early CAD mockups.

A few weeks later, I had the idea to replace the plastic shell and heatsink with a machined metal unibody. Also, I replaced the controller, A/V and power ports with magnetic pogo pin connectors, shrinking it even further. Wesk did some sweet renders of this design.

As you can see, the regulators were still off-board at this point in time (on that triangular sub-PCB). This was all pre-undervolting and pre-Thundervolt! But just a few short weeks later, Wesk and Drew had cracked the code on Wii undervolting, and we started talking about passively cooling the Kawaii.

Somehow nearly a year passed as I worked on Wii U trim development, and then Thundervolt development. Wesk and I realized that putting Thundervolt in Kawaii was a no-brainer, even if it meant we couldn't use an FD Omega and the unit had to grow a tiny bit, from 57x57mm to 60x60mm.

Wesk took over MCAD duties and reworked the shell with new organic fins, and soon after a single magnetic pogo-pin connector.

He also designed a dock! Originally, I anticipated using a bunch of octopus adapter cables to connect everything to the unit. But this dock will keep the Kawaii vertically oriented for optimal heat convection through the fins, and means we don't need to lug around adapters for GC controllers.

That brings us to today! The final Kawaii shell will be machined from aluminum and anodized in a variety of gorgeous colors. The back will be laser-etched with the project logo and dope-looking fake compliance markings.

Planned specs:
  • 60x60x16mm CNC'd aluminum chassis (passively-cooled) with laser etched artwork
  • Undervolted OMEGA trim with Thundervolt
  • 12-pin magnetic pogo pin connector (MagSafe-like)
  • Internal breakout PCB for SD-USB, input protection, and video muxing
  • Internal Bluetooth module for Wiimotes (range likely degraded due to metal case)
  • Dock with USB-C power input, x4 GCC controller ports, composite/component video output, & stereo audio output
  • Six acrylic windows with RGB LEDs for peak aesthetics
  • IR LEDs behind the acrylic windows for sensor bar functionality
  • Keychain loop

Just in case the 60x60x16mm size wasn't registering, here's how Kawaii compares to the GC Nano and Short Stack:

One more thing: like the GC Nano and Short Stack, Kawaii will be fully open source once it's complete!
i will build one eventually trust (gimme 3 years)

They turned out incredibly! Thanks for posting this update, I can't wait for it to arrive! Hope you had a wonderful time, and that you can get some rest after getting held back at the airport for a day

On a side note, that would be amazing if Ding started selling the shells elsewhere as well. Would definitely make it easier for someone to build a Kawaii who missed this order and doesn't want to spend a crazy amount on the shells.

Ding and his family sound like such amazing people, hopefully we see more of their work in the future!
