I want to make a Wii handheld and use an original GameCube controller. Is it possible to split it in half with a Dremel and rewire it? Or will I need to get a GC+ just to use it?

You can chop up a controller to use the sticks and button contacts, but you'll have to wire a GC+ to the chopped bits. Using the controller's IC instead of a GC+ is really fiddly and not recommended for beginners.

I've done that, you cannot say that buying the gc+ will be more expensive because you have to buy something more.
If you are a beginner in soldering it's easier indeed and recommended to have the gc+.
It is harder to solder directly to the lines for the abxy and d-pad than solder the IC however.
There is another trouble. I guess I soldered the wires to close to the buttons and I have to press it hard in order for it to work.
