Hey folks, I'm hoping to recruit the help of some of you smart fellas.
I recently was given 2 guitar hero world tour guitars for the ps2 but did not get the receivers for them. Upon looking locally or on ebay etc. These dongles run about $50 - $70 (which is insane). I've googled around for a while and found rebuild kits (I got one for my x360 xplorer) and found out I can mod the ones I have with something like a pi pico but despite these options, I want to keep them as PS2 guitars so I figured I would try to wire them myself.
Before I get into my theories and such, I want to state that I got the guitars on a trip home and don't currently have them as I had to send them out to myself because I'm not flying with them, I do however have pictures of the PCB's to reference. I also want to state that I have not a clue what I'm talking about when it comes to PS2 stuff so please bare with me lol.
My theory is (and I could be dead wrong) that the PCB inside the guitar is similar a regular controller with the same respective pinout as a regular controller, but the connections run into a separate "Sender" PCB that sends the signals wirelessly to the receiver, which are then "converted" back to the regular pinout and into the console.
TL;DR - Guitar > Sender > Receiver > Console, and I want to cut out the sender and receiver to wire directly. My theory seems to be backed up after looking at how the wired SG guitar's PCB is configured (kind of) and by referencing a OEM PS2 controller that I took apart. The foot print for the capacitor is there but left unused, and the only thing it seems to be missing is the resistors on the data lines.
Here are the Main PCB's in the World Tour Guitar Hero Controller. Youll Notice that the "Sender" PCB is currently unsoldered on the main PCB and is supposed to go where it says "RSF-2030-1-2". Here is the main PCB of the wired Guitar Hero SG Controller that Ive been comparing: ( Dont mind the circled parts as I got these from a website)
Im going to be probing everything when I get home and have everything in front me but all I'm looking for, for now is some of you smart fellas to take a peek and let me know your insights, or if you guys can confirm my theory so I'm not wasting my time here. This will be more of a worklog as I go because I want to figure this out but if I can't, then Ill probably go for the pi pico, or rebuild kit option. Thanks for checking this out!
