The Wii Us SD bus is quite slow, so it can't exactly take advantage of a high speed SD card, but the Wii U is just pretty slow in general.
You can mount a SATA SSD as a USB device for extra storage, but if you are using a rednand, you should get a decently sized SD card instead.

The SATA port is limited to GEN2 SATA, so the speed of a modern SSD won't really matter

there are IOS patches for some of the IOSes, but atm they are still tucked away in Garys server.
