I've ordered 2 wii systems off ebay to work on. I'm a complete beginner. What tools do I need? I've already got a dremel. Is there a thread on affordable, quality tools I'll need?

Also when I start cutting up motherboards how do I start a work log thread?

Working on electronics, especially gaming consoles like the Wii, can be a rewarding but intricate task. Here's a list of tools you might find useful:

  1. Screwdrivers: Get a set of precision screwdrivers. The Wii often uses tri-wing and Phillips screws.
  2. Soldering Iron: For desoldering and soldering components. A soldering station with adjustable temperature is preferable.
  3. Desoldering Pump or Solder Wick: To remove solder from joints. https://vidmateapp.win
  4. Multimeter: For testing continuity, voltage, and resistance. https://vidmate.click
  5. Wire Strippers and Cutters: Useful for working with wires and cables.
  6. Anti-Static Wrist Strap: Helps prevent static electricity damage to sensitive components.
  7. Tweezers: Fine-tipped tweezers are handy for handling small components.
  8. Hot Air Rework Station: Useful for reflowing solder and removing/attaching SMD components.
  9. Flux: Helps in soldering by improving wetting and increasing the flow of solder.
  10. Adhesive (like Epoxy): Useful for securing components.
  11. Isopropyl Alcohol and Cleaning Brushes: For cleaning PCBs and components.
  12. Magnifying Lamp or Loupe: Aids in seeing small details.
  13. Jumper Wires and Breadboard: Useful for testing and prototyping.https://myfiosgateway.win/
  14. MicroSD Card Reader: If you're dealing with Wii software modifications.
  15. Plastic Opening Tools: For prying open plastic cases without damaging them.
Before cutting up motherboards or starting any modifications, it's crucial to do thorough research. You can start a work log thread on forums dedicated to console modding or repair. Websites like GBAtemp or Reddit (e.g., r/consolerepair) often have dedicated spaces for these kinds of discussions.

When creating your work log, consider including:

  • Detailed descriptions of the issues.
  • Photos before and after each step.
  • Tools and materials used.
  • Any challenges you faced and how you overcame them.
  • Final test results.
Always be careful and follow safety guidelines, and remember that modifying hardware may void warranties. If you're unsure about something, it's a good idea to seek advice from experienced modders or repair technicians.
This is a tremendous help, and very detailed. Thanks
