There is unfortunately not many ways you can cut corners when it comes to building an ashida aside from the following:
- Get a cheap or free GC controller for the extra bits
- 3D print the shell yourself or have someone who can print it cheap for you
- Consider getting the PMS Lite over the PMS 2
- Aquire a 4 layer wii for cheap or use your own if you have one
Other than that, all the supporting circuit boards for the ashida are needed and you cant really cut corners money wise on them unfortunately

Also in my experience, the build will probably end up costing much more than $300, even with cheaper components. If it is your first time building a wii portable, I’d recommend having a larger budget than $300 for mistakes and accidents that will occur along the way. I ended up spending around $450 on my ashida, (not including the cost of tools) just due to all the beginner mistakes I made.

This is also very true! You may definitely need to leave some room for error!
I remember when I built my first ashida, I already had a lot of the tools but still needed to buy the proper gauge wire, and ended up having to order another set of ashida PCB's because there was an issue with my first set.
At the end of the day, I ended up paying in the ballpark of around $1300 CAD to build mine. Don't be frightened by that number though, I got PCBWay to print me a transparent shell dyed purple and thats what cost me the bulk of that money:
You can get away with a cheaper shell even if you decide to go with a 3D printing service like PCBWay or JLCPCB. For example, my second ashida shell only cost me $60:
This can be an expensive hobby, but at least we make some cool, good quality stuff lol

If you're going for transparent or transparent with a dye like i did, you'll want it resin printed. Just keep in kind that while it looks great, its brittle enough that it will definitely break or at the very least Crack if you drop it by accident for example
If you want something thats a little more heat resistant and strong, go for something like PETG for example.
I would recommend doing some research into the different materials and even poke through some of the different Ashida worklogs to see what others have gone with before making a decision.
