Hello!
I managed to get this box from work, and I’ve decided to turn it into a portable PS2. The main question right now is: what am I missing?
I know I’ll need batteries, and as you can see, there’s quite a lot of room inside the case. I’m assuming I’ll also need a charging module, BMS/protection, voltage regulation, etc. I know a bit about electronics, but I’m currently stuck figuring out exactly which parts I need.
If anyone is interested in helping me figure this thing out, I’d really appreciate it!
It keeps the build simpler and cleaner, and I can still bring multiple controllers for co-op/multiplayer games when I want to.
I was thinking about using Samsung INR18650-35E 3400mAh 8A cells.
Would these be suitable for a portable PS2? If so, how many cells would you recommend using, and in what series/parallel configuration?

Originally, I was planning to install this PS2 motherboard in my car and put the screen in the passenger sun visor. Eventually I realized that would be a lot of work for something I could really only use while sitting in the car, so I decided a self-contained portable PS2 would be much more useful.
And yes — I do have the original metal shielding for the motherboard and the original fan. The motherboard is also working; I tested it using my friend’s power supply.
So, what am I missing? Especially when it comes to the battery/charging/power side of the project, I’d love some advice before I start ordering parts.

The plan
- Clean up the inside of the case.
I’ll use a drill/milling cutter to remove some of the unnecessary plastic and make more room. - Mount the PS2 motherboard.
I’m planning to 3D-print a base for the motherboard, glue/secure the base inside the case, and mount the motherboard to it. I’ll also add the original fan for cooling. - Mount the screen and controller board.
I’ll 3D-print holders for the screen and its controller board and secure everything inside the top section. - Add hinges.
I’ll probably 3D-print the hinge assembly as well, running from the bottom PS2 section to the screen holder. - Figure out the video connection.
This will probably be one of the more difficult parts. I need to get the video signal from the PS2 motherboard directly to the screen controller I posted.
There isn’t enough room behind the PS2 motherboard to plug the original cable into the video output, so I’m thinking about removing the original connector and soldering wires directly to the appropriate points on the board. - Add the battery system.
This is the part I need the most help with. I need batteries plus the appropriate charging, protection and voltage-conversion modules.
The good news is that the screen works when powered directly from the PS2’s USB ports, so powering the display itself should be relatively easy. - Add an HDMI input.
I was thinking about adding an HDMI port somewhere near the top of the case. That way, I could use the built-in screen for something other than the PS2 if I wanted to — for example, as a small second monitor. - Audio.
This might be a little tricky, but I’m thinking about fitting one small speaker somewhere inside the case. Alternatively, I could simply use a small portable speaker or an audio jack.
Controllers and memory cards
I’ve decided not to build the controllers or memory cards into the case. I’ll carry them separately.It keeps the build simpler and cleaner, and I can still bring multiple controllers for co-op/multiplayer games when I want to.
Battery questions
