I know this isn't technically related to portablizing a console but I'm sure this community probably still knows the answer.

I've got an old Sony boom box that is designed to run on six D batteries (9V in total). I'd like to update it with a rechargeable solution. I can't find a battery pack that would supply 9V. It seems like I might need some form of transformer to adjust the voltage to 9V. Anybody have any experience with this type of thing or have any suggestions? Ideally the rechargeable battery pack would fit in the existing D cell battery well.

It'll likely work just fine from 6ish volt to possibly even 12v. You should be able to find a 7v lithium setup without much issue.
I didn't realize the voltage could differ that much and still work. I'll give that a go. Thanks!

Best way to think about these things is:
1 x D battery = 1.5v (Full charge)
6 x D battery = 9v (Full charge)

1 x D battery = 1v-ish (Low charge/flat)
6 x D battery = 6v-ish (Low charge/flat)

So a 7.4v lithium setup should be well within operating voltages.

Just to close this out, I bought a 2 x 18650 battery pack with a charger. I soldered on a quick-connect. And I soldered some wire and another quick-connect right to the battery terminals (too lazy to open the boom box up). And it works great. I let the radio run for over two hours and it still seems to have plenty of juice left. Thanks for your help, @Wesk !
