Hi all this is my personal machine purchased new not a scratch and super clean inside. It does have some hours on it as I beat a lot of games. Started having trouble reading disks. Now it wont even boot to the browser. I have the red power light then turns on to green power light fan comes on but almost shuts down instantly. A couple of times it has started to spin the disk but still shut down within 4-5 seconds. I opened it up pressed and cleaned both lid micro switches put a drop of oil on the worm gear, slide pin and other side slide rail. I cleaned the lense with rubbing alcohol reset all the laser tray ribbon cables. The laser tray moves freely although slightly notchy from the magnets on the DC motor. They laser sometimes lights up red and pops up and the tray moves some but not a full sweep at all. After hours of looking and reading I did find one person say it looks for the disk reflection before it starts spinning. (As I am trying to comprehend why the disk isnt spinning ) I thought this was a simple laser replacement but dont understand why it wont boot to the browser as I seen video of it booting even with the lid open thus eliminating the micro switches ect. Yeah as a last resort I will throw a new laser and tray at it but im sure you guys can relate In not a parts changer I want to diagnose the problem. There are tons of videos on laser replacement but they will boot up just wont read disk making me think its another prob with the MB or bios or something. Has anyone run into this before? Thx All i hope I posted this in the right place

This is almost definitely a board level issue. If it were any other machine I would say it sounds like thermal issues but I know for a fact that ps2s do not heat up that quickly and are normally fine running fairly hot.

This is very unlikely to be an issue with the optical drive assembly as 77001s boot just fine without the optical drive, along with every other slim ps2 I have tested. (that's how we make portables!)

The first place I would check is your AC adapter, that could be failing under load. Try with another adapter, and/or see if the issue persists on a different machine with the same adapter. Other that that you would have to start to pin down one or Multiple components on the motherboard that are failing. I'm not sure if there's a good map of voltages to reference for 7700x models, but that would be a good place to start.

Ok thx for the confirmation. After 3 days of internet reading, searches and testing my girl is hurt bad and I feel impotent because I cant fix her. All fuses test good. I did find the heatsink was not making full contact with the main processor. See the crescent shape on 1 side. I would estimate it could be a 15-20% loss. I accidentally left in on for about a full day and I think it overheated and fried a chip. There is a guy on reddit that has 7-8 blk and silver 77001 that he cannot get to work so it might be a common problem or factory defect. I will post the pics. If anyone has an extra ps2 slim they can sell plz message me. I could even go with just a console if its power supply is compatible with the 77001 because I have everything else. I have schematics if anybody needs them i will try to post links again trying not to get banned there is some good info here.

Yeah, the Slims will boot without the optical drive. I'm with Jonny on this; it’s definitely a board-level issue. I have a growing stack of PS2s with similiar behavior from my eBay purchases. All fuses are fine, you get the red light, press power, it goes green for a few seconds, then back to red.

I'm not trying to be a know-it-all; there’s more I don’t know than I do know. From what I understand, this behavior is essentially a system power check by the MECHACON chip, indicating something has failed. It’s tough to diagnose because it won’t stay on long enough to check voltages. I plan to continue troubleshooting these boards and can come back with updates until one of us figures something out. There’s barely any information on this since it’s such a deep dive into troubleshooting—more than most are willing to tackle, I guess. I’m planning to get a voltage injection tool, a voltage map of the the motherboards, and an infrared thermometer to go through each power rail and try to find what’s going on.

It’s also possible that the chips need to be reballed, which is another endeavor I’m looking into. It’s possible that some of the chips could be revived with fresh solder joints. We shall see.

Ok thx all yeah I figured it was a common problem and was hoping for an easy fix. The ps2 slim has 69 different motherboards!! LOL www.psdevwiki.c*m/ps2/index.php/Motherboards
