My question is: how do I get the button contacts that I need to register button input to send to 4layertech’s GC+ 2 board? Would I cut them off a Gamecube controller, or are they made elsewhere?

You can use the pads from a GC controller if you want to. Nowdays most people either use the DSlite breakout boards, or good old squishy tacts

So I would wire the GC button membranes to the GC+ 2?
No, you wire the part of the controller PCB with the exposed contacts to the GC+. The conductive membrane sits on top of the PCB and closes the circuit when depressed.

the easiest way is just to get a squishy tact and wire it to gc+ plus and gnd. gc+ is literally a controller already no need to waste an actual gamecube controller
