Worklog First Wii Portable Attempt

If only the wii had better emulators...its very good, not quite perfect.

I find the only consoles (at least Nintendo-wise) that the Wii doesn't run perfectly are DS and N64. There could be games that I'm unaware of that don't work for other consoles though. Fortunately, I don't think many people will want to play DS games on their Wii. N64 is obviously a sought after console to emulate perfectly, but a lot of the "classic" titles run perfectly fine whether through VC or Wii64.

Hello all! back at it again after a move and some other things to attend to at home. I just installed PortablizeMii on my system and it seems to be working.. It doesnt seem to work unless both the SD and USB are attached though and Ive seen other portables with out USBs installed. Anyone know what I'm missing? excited to be back and seeing some new Wii Portables since i left is inspiring. with my current schedule ill only be able to work on this in the Wii (pun intended) hours of the morning after work. As of now I'll start work on my case design

After reading the Wii Trimming guide again I did see it say that USB is required.

"USB is required for PortablizeMii. It is essential for homebrew and launching games. You can directly connect 5v to the slots from your regulator; it does not need to be connected on the actual board."

The bit after it is a little confusing to me though. does this mean that 5V can be supplied to those pads and the USB will no longer be needed? or is it saying that it has to be connected but it can be powered directly from the custom regs?

The latter.

Basically, you have the physical port, which you cut off of the board when trimming, and the cut motherboard. The data connections need to be connected to the motherboard, and in needs to share a common ground, but you can take the voltage directly from the regulator and wire it to the port side, since nothing on the motherboard requires 5v. Hope that clears it up :)

Thanks for the feedback guys! I loaded up one of my favorite GameCube games to test the Wii before trimming and well I've been pretty distracted ever since :XD: I'm waiting on a package of NiCrome Wire to build a hot wire cutter for some hard foam I bought to try and make a buck for a vacuum formed case I really want to try to get a professional looking result like with Ashen's & Gmans cases.

Thanks again for all the help and resources this community is awesome!!

Just a quick update if anyone is interested in playing Phantasy Star Online with your Wii on private servers. I confirmed it is possible and logged on for the first time in AGES!! :D:D:D

A few notes for any one trying this:

-Like Cheese said you must own the original game for this to work. It uses Devolution which requires the original game to be Ripped using CleanRip. This means you should probably do this after installing PortablizeMii and before trimming your Wii (since you will need your disk drive). You also must have a GC Memory card inserted for PSO to create your network settings on.

-One thing I got held up on is the "Hunters License" which I totally forgot about from the game and is essential in playing online. This means even though I had the Original disk, had it running using Devolution, and had my MemCard inserted, I still could not connect until I found my actual game case. After about an hour and completely destroying my garage searching through boxes I finally came across it. The game will ask you for the Serial Number and Access Key to register your "Hunters License". They should be printed on a sticker on the inside of the game case.

This was one of my favorite games growing up and I'm super excited to be able to play online again and eventually on a portable!

Moral of the story is keep your games in the cases, not in a game organizer... :eyeroll:

I love working with the gamecube, im moving onto the Wii right now and hope that it will be easier. It will be my first time softmodding

The softmodding is usually the easiest part of the process, especially with all the work we have put into the modpack and installer.

I just softmodded my Wii for the first time and it was super simple! ShockSlayer has a youtube video of the whole process too which is helpful. Just be sure you pick the right wifi settings for your application.

You guys make this community of portablizers possible. Awesome work on everything!

20170918_174849.jpg 20170918_191209.jpg Holy cow its been awhile since ive touched my Wii...

Ive made some progress today though getting the board cut and wiring up the power reg/U10 relocation. Using a heat gun made easy work of removing the U10/U5 chip just be sure not to drop it on your carpet afterwards.. I got the custom regs from SS, he did a hell of a job making them compact and easy to hook up. I was going to wait until i finished my case to really start hooking things up so for now this will stay put.

As for the trim some places have a little more meat than others i was kinda nervous cutting in too close. All the edges were sanded and sanded again until it was nice and smooth all the way around. looking around the edges i dont see any obvious shorts so im pretty pleased with the end result.

Let me know what you guys think i havent tried booting it up yet im waiting for some feedback just in case.

Looking good, zen_kyle. And welcome back!

Your trim looks great! I would probably use some IPA on that U10 though to clean off the flux residue. Also be sure to verify there are no shorts with a multimeter before powering on. :)
Thanks for the feedback Jeff ill give it another wipe down with IPA. I think some of that discoloration is from me trying to remove those pesky resistors though.

Thanks! Its good to be back and see the other portables progress.

Checking the power lines im getting continuity on 1.5v and 5v. Its showing around 50 Ohms on each. Is this normal? Ive read other post saying it's to be expected but i don't remember the amount they suggested to be okay.

Yes that's fine. The 1.15v and sometimes 1v line will trigger continuity but as long as it's > 10 ohms you're fine.

Thats a relief! I think ill start focusing on the case now. I'll probably try vacuum forming. Thanks again for the feedback
