Hello,

I just picked up a Wii for repair locally, didn't know the history on it other than it really needs some love.

Once I got home, I started basic testing, other than the disc drive being a little noisy (I'll look into the gears later). The Wii functions correctly, except, once I tested Component output, I realized the Wii has some odd visual artifacts in it's rendering. Turns out the higher resolution and progressive scan makes the artifacts more noticeable, however they also appear in Composite Video just more faint.

I have ruled out cable issues, outside interference, and my TV set from 2008. For reference, I'm using my childhood OEM Composite Cable and a "high quality" after market Component cable, however I understand those wholesale cables are typically not trusted. I have another CPU-01 revision board on a JPN Wii, I recently repaired successfully, and the output is perfect besides any imperfections from my TV's panel, and it's backlight, this artifact is not present on that Wii. So we can rule out the AV setup. Since the artifact is consistent in the way it flickers, and the position of each line as well, and due to this being a launch Wii, I fear the GPU has been damaged due to poor airflow (the internals are dusty) and standby mode, (WiiConnect24 is enabled). The Wii seems to have only been used for Wii Sports (found in the disc drive) and Netflix, so we can bet this was an older persons Wii.

My goal is to learn how to confirm this theory, to officially diagnose this system. In the future I would be willing to revive this board if it comes to it being related to the GPU, I'm assuming tho I will not only need a better re-flow gun, but a heating plate to perform a swap, unless this can be done from hot air alone? Since the artifact seems minimal, is it possible the chip just needs to be re-balled?

If I do need to preform a GPU swap with a worthy donor board, can I use any 6 layer board or does it have to be an identical chip found on the CPU-01 board?

Other things I've noticed, is shrinking thermal paste (still barely makes contact tho), warped metal base under the board (Could be prolonged heat related), and some rust around some contacts (Most likely due to moisture in the air).

Below I have provided symptoms specs, and images, along with a quick video of the artifact for reference, any help is greatly appreciated.

Specs

Console: Nintendo Launch Wii

Model: RVL-001

Region: NA

Board Revision: CPU-01

Symptoms

Issue: Consistent grayish pixelated vertical lines that flicker on screen in both OEM Composite and aftermarket Component output.

Theory
Theory: Failing GPU due to WiiConnect24 standby causing over heating? - Please confirm.
