Hello,

I saw some discussion on here from a couple years ago about advances being made in PS1 trimming, but I couldn't see if any updates were ever posted. Are there any sources, even incomplete, on this topic?

Thanks much in advance!

I remember there was a user who cut it about in half and folded it on itself, obviously my advice is to use either a slim or even better in my opinion a 900x

It was Yveltal for his PS Hanami build. Details here.

Yeah SCPH-9001 is in theory a good candidate for trimming if you want to attempt relocating the BIOS ROM & hard wiring a PSIO in. Unfortunately the large DSP chip is required for at least sound. I can't remember if I was able to boot the system without the DSP in place, but it might be replacable with the SPU from a older system. I did attempt a relocation and was unsuccessful. SCPH-5501 consoles have the benefit of working with X-Station, but the fold is quite challenging to perform.

Personally, I think a PM-41(2) PSone is the best candidate for traditional trimming with minimal relocations, however PSIO is still required. I have a theorized "OMGWTF" trim that I have not gone through and validated if it would work, but I'll share it here if you're interested. Please note that the below trim is untested and unvalidated. Please do the work to ensure that this trim will work before attempting. With a BIOS relocation and successful elimination of the DSP, you can theoretically go much smaller than this.
