Screwed Up

Hi everyone, i’m trying to build a trimmed wii but i screwd up. One of these “gold connectors” (idk how they are called) popped off while i was soldering and i can’t solder anything back there. tried to find the path of the point but i could not… any suggestions? this is the mx chip of a wii rev 01

I'm not seeing which exact pad you're referring to, but I will say that each connection you're gonna end up making here is going to end up going to the MX Chip itself one way or another. Soldering directly to the MX Chip isn't difficult, and would likely function as an ideal alternative assuming you can figure out where the pad you burnt off goes to on there.

If you can highlight which pad it is that burnt off, I can help you find which leg on the MX Chip it goes to.

These mistakes are usually caused by one of the following:
- Your soldering iron temp may have been too high.
- You may have held your soldering iron on the pad for too long (using flux tends to make the solder do what you want it to thus helping prevent this).
- Your wire gauge may have been too large (this often leads to pads ripping even after a solid solder joint has been made).

I suspect that the wire gauge you're using here is larger than it should be judging by the picture you sent. I'm pretty sure 34 AWG magnet wire is sufficient for every connection that goes to and from the MX Chip. If you don't already have some, then you're going to need it for things such as Wii via soldering among other micro solder joints in the Wii.

Thank you for all the great advice man! I’m a total noob for what regards soldering and all of that ahah, it is the TP94, it should be for +3 volts coming from the cmos battery, can i hook the battery + somewhere else?

I looked at TP94 on a 4 layer board, and it looks like it's just a ground point. If that's the case, then any other ground point on the MX Chip should work just fine.

Are you sure this is where you're supposed to be connecting the positive side of the battery to? I could also be wrong, but looking at it, it looks to me like TP94 is connected to the ground plane.

oh yeah yeah i meant to say gnd not 3v, i don’t know why i said that haha, thanks i’ll try to solder the cable to ground. I have another question.. i do not understand fully how to wire the +3v from the battery… could you give me some more advice? thanks!

The MX Chip uses a coin cell. One side of the coin cell is positive (labeled with a +), and the other side isn't labeled at all (this would be the ground/minus - side):

I'm pretty sure the Wii uses 2032s like this one ^

It may be difficult to get the solder to stick to this, so I would advise scraping it a decent amount where you plan to solder to it. This helps the solder to stick better.

Also, like any other battery, you don't want to heat it for longer than you have to. Some coin cells vary, and I know of an instance where one exploded. Having said that though, these cells aren't too scary when they explode. 18650s or 21700s are the ones you REALLY don't want blowing up on you.

thanks for the advices. i managed to wire everything correctly. I’m following both the trimming guide for the 4layer revisions wiis and the trimming guide for 6layers revisions wiis together, since one is a sub version of the other. i used a tester to check contact between the + side of the battery holder and the pins on the mx chip that should be receiving the 3 volts but i don’t have contact i don’t know why… gnd does contact tho
