Question has a custom Wii broad ever been thought of being made or is the trim and solder method just the end all be all
Many people have worked on it. It's doable, one guy claims to have mass produced some, but it's VERY hard to get the CPU and GPU off the board without moisture expansion cracking the silicon
 
Where should I look in order to find cheap consoles, especially wiis? What price should I aim for?

Pricing varies greatly by region, but ebay and local pawn shops tend to be the best source of consoles

I had (a potentially stupid) idea to create a portable ps2 with “joy con” like controllers. I’ve spent a few hours researching before commuting any resources to it and I’m certain it’s not feasible. Initially I had the idea of using an 8BitDo Retro Receiver paired with the joy cons but I think it will only pair with the first joy con which establishes the Bluetooth connection first. Then along the same lines I thought of using the Dual SFX Evolution SplitFish PS3 Controller (can link a video for more info if needed) but given they are quiet rare/expensive I’m not sure it’s worth the investment to run into potentially the same problem as the joy cons. Early on in my research I found the PS2 Hori Split Controller and have thought if it would be possible to convert them to Bluetooth or just discreetly wiring them somehow but I believe they only work on Japanese consoles and I am based in Europe so another dead end. Just wondered if anyone with greater knowledge and experience would know of a potential way of making this happen or is the single device Bluetooth connection a dream killer?

I am currently working on a portable with a similar idea, my plan is to use something similar to this: Amazon product ASIN B0CXDDNL5Wthis is a split controller and most of them have different modes, bluetooth and nintendo mode. if you set them to the normal bluetooth they share one connection but the do have wiring in the back. If you would like to make it more discreet though, the cable connecting the two sides only moves six pins with two being ground (gnd,gnd,pwr,dta,dta) the rest of the pins on the cable are no connect pins. Hope this helps!

That’s brilliant thank you! I did see these but was unsure if it could work so thank you! Yeah I think potentially removing the back connector and just keeping the wire would work well. Just thinking could you do that with say a PS3/4 controller, split it in half and run a wire connecting them?

While I am not sure on the specifics of that controller, Most official controllers (unless purposefully joycons) are created with one single pcb stretching the lengths of the whole controller. This situation would be near impossible to split in half, trust me i have tried. If you find ps3 joycons from a 3rd party that could work!
Though... If you take the controller pcb and desolder all the buttons and joycons, you could put them where you want and hand solder them to the pcb but it would be much more time consuming and risky. Pay attention if it has analog triggers as thos could be hard to transport.

hello! i have an idea for a portable Wii that doesn't actually require any modding, where you'd just slot the Wii into a box, connect all the wires, and have it output into one of those portable monitors you get on Amazon for like 50 bucks slotted into the box. it would kinda be like the Intel screen for the GameCube where you just attach the stuff and it works. My actual question is though, how much power would the battery need to make both the Wii and screen run for preferably 6 or more hours, and would anyone be able to provide a link? the battery would also preferably be pass through charging like smaller phone portable batteries since then you don't have slot out each time you wanna use it plugged into a wall.

update: i figured it out! basically i did some research and found out that the maximum amount of watts/hour any normal Wii player will be using is 20 watts, and for the portable monitor, 10 inch ones can get up to 10 watts/hours. now i know what i need for the battery, and thanks to some youtube shorts recommendations, i know about ups, uninterrupted power supply, which are basically big batteries that give you enough time to save your work in the event of a power outage while working on your PC. then i looked on amazon for one, and i found a 50 amazon basics one that is 255 watts (also 400 VA which i'm not quite sure what that means but i'm gonna assume it means 400 voltage amps and is just another measurement for power like watts) and has a ton of outlets, has surge protection, and it can power the stuff connected to it while it's on the wall, which is exactly what i needed. I did the math and at the maximum amount of power it can draw, it's gonna last 8.5 hours. The one thing i'm worried about is that ups' aren't necessarily designed for this stuff, so i'll keep looking for other solutions, but for now i'm really excited since i have all the stuff picked out and i just need to get the 3D printer, the battery, and the monitor to actually make this pseudo-portable inexpensive (when compared to actual portables) Wii happen. thanks everyone and I'll be back with progress updates now and then, and i hope to finish it by the end of the summer.

update 2: i found out that the UPS is an extremely bad idea to use as a portable power supply. i have instead decided that I am going to use one by powkey and i just hope that i understood the stuff right so i don't end up getting one that only lasts like 4 hours.

Hello was wondering if someone could help me understand why I can't get my Wii to boot. Basically I had everything working fine the Wii would boot and then I hooked up usb and a controller port and turned it on and went into the piiloader menu and clicked on one of the settings and it went to a black screen, after that I tried to reboot the Wii BC I thought it needed to be reboot and it wouldn't boot, even when pressing the button to turn on the Wii it doesn't show a 3.3v single to the u10 via and doesn't show any voltages on my Wii anymore idk what went wrong I think in the process of doing this I checked continuity with the usb data lines while the battery was still connected so maybe I shorted something out idk? Hopefully someone can help or possibly is the PMS board broken?? The pictures below don't have any of the usb or controller port cables connected because I wanted to narrow down the issue

Was wondering if I could get some help with getting my Wii past PriiLoader. Have all regulators wired correctly, Wii is able to boot to PriiLoader and can launch homebrews, but was not able to get to the System Menu to pair a WiiMote (Bluetooth/Wifi have not been relocated, are still on the board, board is not trimmed). I had pre-setup RV loader and was able to boot to it, but was not able to control it from a GC controller for some reason. I think I then made a mistake in relaunching the RVLoader installer from PriiLoader, and now the system thinks RV loader is not installed (can't use controls to progress through the installer).

Any help getting into the System Menu and un-breaking RVLoader would be great. Afraid I may have made a mistake in booting to the RVLoader installer again...
 
Hey there, is anyone familiar with a low input lag, oled screen component I could use in a portable wii? Preferrably around the 7inch size. I plan to make like a wii micro with a flip up screen but not having much luck finding information on response time of the screens. I know OLEDs are fast but not sure if some of these online are built for low input lag :)

You could just use a 7” lcd, oled screen seems overkill, and for refresh rate most wii games run from 30-60fps so if you are using it for a portable wii almost all screens should be sufficient, but you might want one that excepts vga input as wii does not have hdmi output

Thanks for the reply, It's very important the screen has as little input latency as possible as I will be playing melee on it and would be comparing it to a crt, oled is just the best flat screen option for input delay as far as i know. My oled gaming monitor input lag tests at under 0.03ms. So a normal lcd isn't what i'm after.

I understand you will play competitive and want low input latency, but you will be outputting 60hz from the Wii via vga and so this limits your monitor speed to 60hz otherwise you would likely experience tearing. And honestly even for colpetative play 60hz isn’t bad especially in a portable where you will be more limited by things like the controller and screen size. Also I don’t believe they make high refresh oled displays for vga input.

I think you're missunderstanding, I don't want a higher refresh rate, I want low input delay.

An lcd tv could have a 200ms input delay at 60hz while a gaming oled monitor can get under 0.1ms delay at 60hz. It's just hard to find infomation on it for small diy screens like you'd use in a portable and wondered if anyone has any suggestions.
 
hi, im not sure if this is the right place, so apologies if not, im very new to bitbuild and forums in general. im at the beginning stage of my ashida build. ive trimmed the wii and ordered all the parts from the 4 layer store. i was wondering if there is a place with specific instructions? also im struggling to find anything on the blue vga board so any help or directions with that would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!
