Yeah, we're all sick of the rising prices for parts. It really stinks that everything is so expensive these days. But what if there was an inexpensive alternative made from reject PS5 parts? Well, there is!
I'd like to introduce you all to the AMD ASRock BC-250 APU:
(source: AliExpress)
From my limited understanding of PC building, this is a unit that was made for PS5s (or its specs are similar to it. I'm not sure I understand it myself) but those that didn't meet Sony's quality standards were shipped/given/sold to crypto miners. When that bubble burst, the price of these things plummeted and several wound up on eBay/AliExpress/etc. and were sold for dirt cheap.
Since then, people have found out how to turn these things into budget gaming PCs, and that's why I'm sharing this with you guys. I managed to get one of these APUs at a fairly decent price and have acquired some of the parts.
I've been following this guide here and have started acquiring parts. I still need a few more but here's what I've got so far as well as what I paid for them:
- AMD BC-250 APU 16GB GDDR6 ($218), eBay
- Samsung 980 PRO 2TB Internal Gaming SSD PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe ($130)^, Best Buy
- Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM 120mm Premium Quiet Cooling Fan 4-Pin ($30), eBay
- Corsair RM750e RPS0177 80 Plus Gold 750W Fully Modular Power Supply ($40), eBay
Total spent so far: $418
Total projected spending for remaining parts: $200
Total projected budget: $618
^Bought in December 2024
This is very new territory for me and is really scary, but I hope that I can turn this reject PS5 component & abused crypto miner into my next PC that I will cherish, love, and take care of for as long as possible.
Here's an article from a guy who probably knows more about this than I do: https://aftermath.site/bc250-steam-machine-budget-computer/
Here's a pic of the start of my build so far:
Please let me know what you guys think about this as I've gone pretty deep down this rabbit hole lol. What other parts would you guys recommend?
Thanks for reading!
EDIT: I should mention I also have a 3D printer and plenty of PETG filament to print a case. I haven't gotten that far into the build yet because I'm still acquiring parts.
