Background
A few years ago, my brother found my old Mario Bros Multi Screen Game & Watch in the attic when helping my parents move house, and earlier this year I was reunited with it after my brother came to visit. This thing was designed the year I was born, and I spent many hours playing it as a kid. It is somehow still in excellent condition!
I've been wanting to make a Game & Watch inspired portable for a long time, so I figured the summer contest was great motivation to start on it!
Planned Features
- Clamshell Wii portable, targeting ~30mm thickness when closed
- Case x/y dimensions to match the vertical Multi Screen series (Donkey Kong, etc)
- Omega-trimmed Hollywood 2 Wii
- 3.5" laminated IPS screen
- 4.47v, 5000mAh LiPo battery
- Thundervolt (naturally)
- RVL-DD for digital video
- New 3DS sliders and face buttons
- Custom hall-effect analog triggers
- USB-C charging and data transfer, Micro SD card slot
- Bottom-firing mono speaker, headphone jack
- Custom PCB hosting RVL-DD, GC+, RVL-AMP, connectors, and custom charging circuit
WIP Renders
Here's a couple of renders of the current (work in progress) shell design.
Challenges
This is my first time designing a portable, so the controls and battery management designs are all completely new to me. Additionally, the goal of keeping the closed thickness of the portable under 30mm means I'm designing around a teeny tiny 30x30x4mm blower fan and slim heatsink - I have no idea if the final thermals will be acceptable with this setup but I'm quietly confident based on my back-of-napkin math.
Good luck everyone!
