I haven't done anything with the 6 layer boards so I can't answer that. I did wire a battery to mine but it's not necessary except for games that need the clock to stay on full time like Animal Crossing. My understanding is you can hook up the MX chip without the battery and it will do everything except stay on when the wii is off.

Did you wire it directly to the B+ pad?
I need that clock for Pokemon channel
