Well it looks like the "1 and 7" theory is broken, or at least bent. There is a 6 in with the white cpu 40s which means that 1 and 7 aren't the only numbers they can be. And there are a couple 1s in other groups, so having the number start with a one doesn't necessarily mean anything.
All of the white consoles listed that start with 7 are still cpu 40s.
It looks like at the very least, there is a trend between the first number and the model, but with enough exceptions to make it difficult to tell from the outside as of yet.
@cheese Did you happen to notice a font difference in the words "serial number" between the different models? I only have a small number to compare, but it seems like the 40s have thinner letters.
