Sorry for the long post, there’s a TLDR at the end
The centrepiece of the Ashida and the reason to build it over other designs, at least for me, is the controller. I really want it to feel as close to original as possible. I’ve acquired a few “well used” GameCube controllers locally, and they are “fine”. I can certainly harvest things like a second Z button from them, but the face button pads are mushy and worn out.
I have a lightly used Smash 4 GCC (which I bought new years ago and haven’t used much) and I also recently bought a Switch 2 GCC (the official NSO one), and they both feel amazingly crisp and tactile when I press the buttons and the sticks feel tight and precise.
Not wanting to sacrifice either of these controllers for an Ashida, I started looking around for replacement button pads and stick boxes for my “well used” controller’s buttons and triggers. As mentioned, I don’t really want “worn out” stick boxes or button pads as I want it to feel as original as possible, so I was mainly looking at brand new Wii classic controllers or nunchucks, and battle beaver’s replacement button pads that generally get high praise for feeling close to original. The problem is that when I priced everything out including shipping, it was going to be MORE expensive than just buying a brand new Smash Ultimate OEM GCC off the shelf at a local store for ~$70 USD, so I’m currently considering just buying that and then using all the parts either from that, or my lightly used Smash 4 controller for the Ashida.
TLDR:
It’s cheaper to pay ~$70 USD for a brand new controller than it is to piece together replacement parts for a well worn controller to make it feel new.
It feels bad to gut a brand new working controller, but I want my Ashida to feel like a brand new controller or close to it.
Is that a pipe dream anyway? I know I’ve heard about people having small tolerance issues with the Ashida shell. I’m going to have it printed in SLS nylon, but tolerances will never be as tight as the OEM injection moulds.
Should I just do it? Or is there a better option?
I started down the road of making a portable Wii about 5 years ago, but only got as far as the soft modding (with PortablizeMii) as I had the grandiose idea that I would design my own portable from the ground up as my first ever portable build. That did not happen, but I still want to build a portable. What better way to relive my childhood nostalgia, playing games the way they were meant to be played, using the controller they were designed to be played with, than to build an Ashida? I’ve already ordered all the 4LayerTech parts (they were all in stock!) and now I’m working on sourcing everything else.
Maybe after I finish this build, I can once again consider my own design…
