Question GBC membranes

Hi -- do you all have any tips on getting good, consistent button responsiveness from modded GBC / GBA? I've got some funnyplaying shell / button / membranes and I feel like there are very, very occasional missed button registration, especially on the dpad. I almost can't tell if it's actually happening or not. I don't have any original, functional consoles to compare it with. Is it normal? Something you just learn to live with? Should I just get a pile of membranes and test them to find the "best" one?
