After many failed 3d prints, shoulder button iterations, late night soldering sessions, and VGA debugging, I have finally finished my first wii portable. The main goal was to create a portable that was somewhat compact, while still maintaining full size gamecube buttons, plently of features, and decent ergonomics. The portable case is printed is printed in dark cherry red PLA from Atomic filament, with only very minor sanding on some rough parts.
Final Feature List:
  • OMGWTF trim
  • Full size aftermarket gamecube buttons with the standard layout
  • DS lite dpad (I can't stand the gamecube dpad)
  • Hall effect switch joycon sticks from K-Silver
  • Dual-tact shoulder buttons (TMHF07)
  • 4x18650 batteries (1s4p configuration)
  • 5 inch 480p VGA screen from 4LT
  • HDMI out via Electron Shepherd's VGA switch and ElectronAnalog
  • Standard 4LayerTech boards
  • Bluetooth relocation (unfortunately the MX chip was too thick to fit)
  • Built in IR sensor bar
  • 5-way switch screen controls (same as in Wesk's Aran)
  • External usb port for the Gamecube controller adapter
Pictures!

The internals have changed slightly since this photo was taken, but I'll update this photo if I open it up again.

Thank you to everyone on the forums who shared their work, and everyone on the discord who answered questions, I couldn't have done any of this without you guys and the magnificent wii trimming guide and compendium.

I have registered for the summer competition, and although I am not very confident that my project will be finished by the deadline, I am working on something with the PS2.
Thanks again, and have a great day!

It looks fantastic , can I ask you more information? Do you have the 3D model? The LCD panel looks very good, what model is it?

I missed this when it was initially posted, I love what you did with the batteries extending downwards to give you more of a grip on the unit. I also love the IR LEDs for bluetooth and the HDMI out since that's such an underrated feature! Reminds me that I still need to add IR LEDs into my G-Wii with HDMI out. Beautiful build overall!

Cool build! I designed a portable for my sister that used GC buttons once and it unfortunately didn’t look as sleek as this (it looked more akin to a brick XD.) It also had a lot less features which is super impressive!

Your project looks awesome, really impressive!
How did you handle the HDMI part? Does the screen turn off automatically when you plug in the HDMI?

What are its measurements?
It measures 220x95mm with a thickness of 27mm in the middle, and 37mm at the grips.

The HDMI comes from the ElectronAnalog from Electron Shepherd, and there is also VGA switch from there that cuts the video to the screen when the HDMI cable is plugged in, using the HPD signal.

That’s really cool! I didn’t know about it since I’m from Brazil.
Do the infrared LEDs stay on all the time, or is there a switch to turn them on and off?
