Hello everyone! You can call me Nan :D I have always wanted to make my own portable gaming console. I have this very old Acer Aspire 7 gaming laptop that has 512 gb ssd, 8 gigs of ram, a 1650 gpu and a ryzen 5, 5500 or 5800, i dont remember which, cpu. i was gonna make a gaming console out of it. Sure it wont be small. it'll be somewhere like 12 - 15 inches in width and 10 inches in length. The laptop itself is beat up and its pretty much unusable. I wanted to finalise the components I buy for this. This is the overview of a back and forth i had with claude for getting an understanding of things, dont judge :>

Wide tablet form factor with controller grips and thick base for dual-use (handheld + lap/table mode)
Display: 8" screen - HDMI monitor or LCD panel + controller board (preferred for reducing thickness) - integrated into case
Controls: Dual analog sticks, D-pad, ABXY buttons, L1/L2, R1/R2 (PlayStation/Xbox style layout)
Form Factor: Wide tablet with controller grips on sides + thick bottom base
Thick Base Design:
Can stand upright on table/lap (tabletop mode)
Houses battery for stability
Ergonomic grip when holding
Bottom-heavy weight distribution

Power: Dual charging system
Original barrel jack (19V) for fast charging at home
USB-C PD (Zac Builds style mod) for portable charging

Portability: Can hold and game, or rest on surfaces when arms tire

Dock Station (Separate):Display: 15.6" LG panel (LP156WFH-SPD1) with controller board ( this is the original screen of the laptop that i want to repurpose)
Function: console connects via HDMI/USB when docked
Benefits: Desktop gaming mode, charge while docked, connect USB peripherals

So if anyone can help me out get a better understanding of things, give me some youtube videos i can refer to to understand or even help me out in any way, it would be very much appreciated :D
What i would mainly want is like more help on what to buy and what to look out for when making this project. I dont have thermal paste and thermal putty which i will need to reseat the heatsink.Similarly, help me identify the components that can or can't attach onto the motherboard.

Hello. For software, retroarch might be an option. Would use xbox controller guts for compatibility. Shell would have to be 3d designed and printed, or frankencased, which can be done if you use jb weld epoxy and NOT super glue. Reusing the screen can be done, but would be extremely difficult and I would recommend just using hdmi or vga screens for dock and handheld mode. Easier to use than connecting screens with proprietary connectors. Also, might want to check some of the other portables on the site. A lot of the methods still apply. Best of luck.
