Discussion Inside an AliExpress Wii Portable

So I've been overhauling my PS2 portable recently and I've just got to know: What is that screen! Frankly I'd love a 4:3 solution with a smaller driver board than the Eyoyo 8" :D

Question What age is normal for making a portable

I started in my late 30s - we all know nothing when we start, and as a friend of mine says "every day is a learning day" :) What's held me back frequently has been lack of income, but you can still do a lot of fun things with cheap equipment!

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

Truth be told a lot has changed since I started this project. I purchased a Lenovo ThinkPad which has quickly taken over as my "on hand" unit at all times, meaning I've no need for a portable Raspberry Pi anymore as I can drive any screen I want with the laptop, and game on it if I wish. Plus...

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

Well this is the assembly! I had the case arrive today so I've spent the last four hours assembling everything inside the portable! Header photo to make you think that everything is OK! But we all know that the foreshadowing here would suggest it's not [dramatic tension!] And I also pulled...

2021 contest entry: The Big Pii

You don't need to have things perfect to call them finished for the competition, you can always call something an entry even if it's not quite what you were aspiring towards (in saying that, I'm not in charge of the competition, and it'll be amazing if I complete anything also as I'm waiting on...

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

I reckon I owe you all an update as there's been a furious amount of development and problem solving on this end as I'm hell bent on getting this case perfect before I pay for someone else to do a good print of it, also given the timeline involved here I've really only got one shot at this, so...

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

Right, project update time! There's been a lot going wrong in real life at the moment - NZ ended up under another lockdown and now we're running around trying to catch up with family that we've neglected for nearly a month; still the PCBs arrived yesterday and I managed to grab a day to work on...

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

Hands up who wants an update! So after licking my wounds and totally not getting sidetracked making CNC carved models of Baby Groot I decided that I should stick to the spirit of the competition and actually make it look like I was trying to finish this competition as opposed to flicking it away...

    N64 Portable - Tanuki

Don't say it's over until it's over - the competition doesn't close until October and you may still get things scratched together sufficiently to make an entry in the competition which you can revise later. Until we got an extension last year my PS2 portable case had bits of ice-cream container...

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

Not sure how to put this: the PCB I had made has some serious underlying flaws and issues making it largely unusable for this particular task. While I could (and just might) end up going over all the components used to see what's wrong it's getting a bit beyond my ability to solder down tiny...

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

Boards from JLC PCB showed up yesterday, and while I still cannot fault their design I've got to wonder what I was thinking when I made it as there are a couple of glaring oversights that I really should have been smarter about. Oh well, just going to have to make it work somehow. So at the...

Worklog [̶2̶0̶2̶1̶ ̶C̶o̶n̶t̶e̶s̶t̶ ̶E̶n̶t̶r̶y̶]̶ Worklog: The KiWii Portable

I think you'll thank yourself for the extra screen size - I know I always have with the ones I've made, and 5" is about the bottom of what I now find acceptable, with 6"+ starting to enter into the "comfortable" territory, and 8", well that's just luxury!

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

Well I've just send the PCBs off to JLC, but not without a mess of blues that I always seem to go through. Had I done this a week ago many of the components I wanted would have been in stock, and now I've got to purchase them elsewhere and the price is eye-watering. Suffice to say, I've learnt...

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

The ongoing warpath... So after playing with cardboard and mucking around with layouts I eventually settled upon something that felt good and fit the requirements I sought. Actually...I haven't mentioned what any of the features are...a working Pi Portable? Ok - lets go with that. I can add...

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

Standing on the shoulders of giants the PCB for the unit is going together very rapidly and easily, which makes me thing that I've done something wrong of course. I've turned to bits of left-over wood for the case prototyping too, just so I'm sure of the design :) So I'm happy with the...

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

Thing is that's life, and it's something you die with, not from, so all things considered it's just something that re-frames priorities in life. Prior to this I'd happily survive on 4 hours sleep a night but now I need a full 8 hours so it's like I've been robbed of 4 hours of my day. This has...

2021 Contest Entry: GB Adwiince v2

Oh I love this idea! Frankencasing is quickly becoming a lost art, and everything about this concept is fantastic!

MRKane's final portable [KeyLime Pi-Rate Station]

Final portable AKA "the only thread with Fluffy the WaxEye in it". So I had no intention of entering in this years competition due to my situation in life, but after a discussion with a few friends they kind of twisted my arm with phrases like "You've got to do something" or "You can't just...

Worklog AtomicPlayStation2: My first portable project. My first portable PS2.

The PS2toHDMI board you've got there is an image upscaler that uses yPbPr and gives a very nice picture over HDMI. The only issue I had with them a few years ago was the black borders around the image and I'm keen to know if the picture now fills the screen during use :)
