Really beautiful project! I remember seeing this on and off in the Discord, but I never got a good look at it. Always appreciate when people are able to open source like this! Great stuff man!
Any model of any console motherboard can be trimmed, but the community chooses to target specific motherboards since they are often the most optimal for portablizing. Sometimes this is because is because they draw less power, other times this is because they're much easier to trim down to a...
I'm afraid you're not going to be able to fix this motherboard. The RAM traces here are very sensitive, and any bodge wires would have to go under the chip on a bus where trace length and thickness is very sensitive due to tolerances and other variables. I don't think this is very recoverable...
Update time! I've been continuing to iterate through the front and back revisions of this on and off in an effort to line up the screw posts and other various things. Somewhere along the way @Bubberiffic @Shank and @buzzyc inspired me to replace the screw posts with brass inserts:
I haven't...
The jumper pak resistors and capacitors are used for terminating the RAM bus. This is true for both the expansion pak and the jumper pak (they both use an identical method to terminate the RAM bus) with the difference between the two of them being that the expansion pak also has an extra 4 MB...
What were you looking to use as a replacement method for the expansion port? If you were looking to do an Akira method, or use an Akira flex (both methods of manually relocating the resistor paks contained on the jumper pak), removal of all these pins was going to be needed regardless.
I...
Thanks a lot for the kind words! I'm a huge fan of the GameCube vibe too, and I would also be on the fence about the color for the bezel and joystick nubs. The shell was a joy to put together, and I'm glad you're happy with the shell!
Best of luck to you with this build, and as always, if...
This definitely falls into the niche category of features, but it sounds like a really awesome one to implement! Also, I don't think we've got enough portables with clam-shell designs, so this sounds really cool and unique! Having a track pad for the C stick will work well with trying to keep...
The unreliable booting could have been wire length, but it may have also been the U10 wire depending on how your U10 relocation looks. Looking at your board, it doesn't look like you did U10 relocation, so I'm guessing you used the U10 pad on the PMS2. I won't say that's an invalid solution by...
I've always really loved the "Wii" vibe that this build goes for. Most Wii portables go for a GameCube vibe, but this one leans all the way into the Wii aesthetic, and I love it! How do the tact switches feel with the ABYX buttons? I know that the G-Wii's A button suffers a bit from the...
Holy smokes dude! This is shaping up to be the cleanest G-Wii build I've ever seen! Loving the usage of brass inserts! Those are a very underrated touch to a build like this. I've seen people attempt custom PCBs on a G-Wii before, but I've not seen one this clean. Absolutely beautiful work!
It looks you studied color theory to make this build! Really visually appealing! For a moment, I thought the 3d printed brackets were black PCBs. Such a stunning choice of colors for the sticks and buttons! I especially love how the orange filament matches the sticks! Can't wait to see more...
Yeah, Dpad buttons really are just a "kill it with fire" sort of solution when it comes to input accuracy. Problem is, it does also kill diagonal inputs with said fire. This works fine for games like Puyo Puyo and Tetris, but games like Contra and Gain Ground really suffer from it. I probably...
I know these boards aren't the topic of this thread, but I always loved how people were able to streamline the G-Wii with these. It'd be really neat to see a version of these boards where the ABYX buttons use membranes instead of the orange tact switches. It'd require precise trimming of the...
For a portable, I prefer having Dpad buttons. My Starlight G-Wii used four 3rd party GameCube start buttons as Dpad buttons:
I really like Dpad buttons because they offer perfect input accuracy - something I've noticed a lot of portables struggle with.
If you have your heart set on it being...
Update time! I managed to reduce the internals another 10mm making this build 30mm shorter in width than the original:
This is an amazing savings, and makes rev2 look tiny by comparison! I needed to rework quite a lot to make this happen, but it's still comfortable in the hands, and I think...
The first thing that jumps out at me here is the gauge of wire you're using is way too big for smaller solder connections. Looking at the RCP pin here:
This part of the picture is blurry, but I don't think anyone could've possibly made this connection with this wire gauge without shorting one...
