When you say you couldn't get it to do anything, was it outputting a black screen or no video at all? Without usb hooked up, it'll show a black screen for a while. Mine usually does it for 30 secs or so before booting to priiloader. A reset button would also help.

Have you considered a wii portable? They can play gamecube games off of a flash drive and can be pocket sized. GameCube portables are much larger, require more cooling, and eat up battery life. They also require a wasp fusion to make use sd cards, and those are out of production. A wii portable...

I just want to add that it's impossible to put a resistor in "backwards". It doesn't matter which way it goes. That threw me on my first led mod :) Also Radioshack might have what you're looking for.
