The Kingston microSD to USB adapter (FCR-MRG2) with a samsung microSD (Samsung EVO is what basically everyone uses). Just download the installer and follow the instructions in the original post. The BBLoader installer will do the work replacing PortabilizeMii for you. Just make sure that you read the original post for instructions and make the right selection regarding patching Wi-Fi and VGA.

The weird thing, however, is that for both Yurusenai and Ginger the drives don't even show their partition properly on a PC with the adapter, instead showing up as 23.25 GB of unallocated space.

If you selected to patch out Wi-Fi when installing BBloader then you're good to go. You don't see anything much because you don't have any games on your flash drive. You could also move around BBLoader with the GameCube C-Stick.

You must install BBLoader before trimming the board. Normally Wi-Fi is requirement for the Wii to boot, but BBLoader can remove that requirement. As you will be cutting off the easy way to connect Wi-Fi, you're going to want to install it now.

Your best bet when buying off Ebay when it comes to price would be to find one with a broken disk drive - you'll be removing it anyways so it doesn't matter. Regarding finding a 4 layer, read the basic identification guide that Aurelio previously linked you here...

For trimming and use in a portable, a 4 layer is a 4 layer. You are fine with a Wii without GC ports. When you wire up your GameCube controller (or rather, hopefully a GC+) you will be wiring it up elsewhere on the board from where the ports would be. See either the "GameCube controllers"...
