We already need one to bypass the disk drive so it would be useful if there was a way to not check for the fan. Just an idea...

I just solder right onto it I just try to get a bunch of solder onto it and then I solder the wire to it. I don't know if it's safe but you could try using flux if you have it

I think I might have caused some confusion and I'm sorry about that. If you are trimming the board you don't necessarily have to remove all those components unless you want to test to see if your board boots with the regulators. Once you trim the board you get rid of the components then wire up...
