So, I don't have a Wii, but I was wondering if my Wii U contains Wii hardware that could potentially be used for a portable.

The Wii U has entirely different hardware from the Wii, the backwards compatibility is done via virtualization. You'll need an actual 4 layer Wii for a portable.
