I would like to make a semi portable wii u, but the disk drive is just so large, I read somewhere that there were some disk drives that are compatible with it, but after googling multiple different keywords, I get the same either replacements or generic optical drives. anyone know any that are slimmer and can read the disks?

There are no disc drives the wiiu supports besides the ones manufactured specifically for it. You have to remember that the firmware on the drives is (most likely) built for the wiiu, and the wiiu verifies the drive with a key only that drive / wiiu has. It is possible to swap disc drives between consoles with funky seeprom edits, but a completely different drive is just not going to work.

but...why? the wiiu natively supports storing games on NAND/USB. a disc drive here makes no sense to appease the crowd

because theres something nastalgic to me about booting up mario party 10 to play with my family and hearing the disk drive whir. the wii u was my first console as a kid so it brings back memories

well, good luck with the power draw + you'd need some way to provide 12v to the drive to make it actually read discs

Most of the volume reduction of making a Wii U portable would come from elimination of the disc drive. If you keep the disc drive, your semi-portable Wii U will wind up being the size of a Wii U.

As Lazr said, 99.99% chance you aren't going to find a compatible drive with the Wii U, unless you do some serious customization work. For all that is currently known, if you want to use a disc drive on the Wii U, it has to be one from a Wii U.
