Question How to start

I've recently been inspired to try and make a Wii portable, however, all my knowledge is software side and I have no idea where to even begin to make a portable. I have been told that I need a lot of practice to make one, but I am not sure what "practice" entails. If anyone could show me how to get started or what kind of portable I should try to make that would be great.

Practice could mean doing a basic "hello world" type hardware thing like a basic electronics / arduino kit. You should definitly have some soldering experience before soldering a wii for the first time.

The only way to learn soldering is by doing. I would recommend finding a cheap DIY kit that requires some soldering. Through-hole parts to start out.

alright, i think ill check that out, im assuming it does, but just to be sure, the kit comes with a guide telling you what to solder where, right?

Not really. On the PCB, the part values are shown and you find the correct part in the bag to solder it. You'll learn about indientifying resistor values fast.
