Electron Sheperd Internal HDMI Adapter install on a PlayStation 1 - SCPH-5501

I'm attempting to install the Electron Shepherd universal HDMI internal adapter to a PS1. motherboard is a PU-18 Model. I'm following the pin install that Macho Nacho did for his Ultraslim PS2 as the pins should be the same layout.

however, once I install it and attempt to get video from either the AV port or HDMI adapter. well, I get no signal. once I uninstall the wires from the AV port it works fine. I do have some component cables from hdretrovision and those work so I know it can get component video.

the jumper for the audio is closed, and the video is open on the HDMI adapter. not sure where to go from here. any thoughts or ideas? thanks

Well, your issue for the ElectronAnalog is that it only supports RGBHS or YPbPr. You've wired it up like you're going to use Component (YPbPr) but the PS1 doesn't output that signal. You'll need to use RGBHS and bridge the required pads.

Well, your issue for the ElectronAnalog is that it only supports RGBHS or YPbPr. You've wired it up like you're going to use Component (YPbPr) but the PS1 doesn't output that signal. You'll need to use RGBHS and bridge the required pads.
To further build on this & explain why your HDRetrovision cables work, those include an internal RGB to YPbPr transcoder inside the cable, hence why it seems like you can get component video out of the PS1.

In order to set the ElectronAnalog to accept RGB, you'll need to bridge a jumper with a blob of solder as per this diagram:

Then you'll want to wire H/V sync to the ElectronAnalog, following Wesk's guide, found here.

Please keep in mind that ElectronAnalog does not feature any scaling or line doubling. Most TVs do not handle 15khz signals correctly at all, and some will refuse to even display them over HDMI, as these resolutions are technically outside of HDMI spec. You may need to pair this with some sort of scaler, such as the Retrotink 4K, OSSC Pro, or PixelFX Morph 4K for the best results. If you end up having to do this, you're better off just using your HDRetrovision component cables, as these scalers generally feature way better DACs internally than what ElectronAnalog provides.

Thank you both for your clarification. I will attempt to wire it the other way and see what happens. My original thinking was that since the component cables from HD retrovision worked on the PS1 that's maybe wiring up internally with the HDMI adapter could work. But now that I know that the cables tap into the RGB and convert it into component.

This was more of an experiment to be honest as the idea came up while I was attempting to rewire the PSIO chip (I have grown to hate the PSIO and will switch to xstation at some point) I had actually already removed the serial port from the board so worst case scenario if this does not work I'll just continue to use the cables until maybe I install a PS1 digital kit. Thank you both for your input and I'll let you know what happens.

so right now, the only issue im running into to determine if this will work is the 5v power the adapter requires. when I have that wire connected to pin 10 on the AV port, the unit will not show video on ether the AV or HDMI adapter. I'm looking for another 5v point on the motherboard to connect to for testing. Do you have any recommendations on a point I can use?

On PU-18, the 5V rail is generated by stepping down the 7.5V rail through a 7805 voltage regulator. This 7805 only has an output capacity of 500mA, and is normally powering the video DAC. ElectronAnalog draws 300mA on average on its own, so combined with the video DAC you might be overloading the 7805, causing it to shut down assuming it has any overcurrent protections. I don't remember what the PU-18 video DAC draws, personally I would think it shouldn't be too much, but you never know.

One thing I would try is see if you can power ElectronAnalog off the 3v5 rail, as it has much more capacity than the 5V rail does.

thanks for the info. i will try to use the 3v5 rail on the parallel port, pin 17 or 51 to see if that can power it on and try from there. Once again, thank you all for your help.

so, I'm not getting anywhere with the power on this adapter. I think at this point I'm going to use the adapter on my fat PS2 and just either bust out the had retrovision cables or do a ps digital install at some point. I thank you all for the info and help. while I wasn't able to get what I wanted, it was a good learning experience. thank you again.
