Solved Best Screen Setup for Portable PS2

I've been searching through the forums to find some solid information on what screen to use for a portable PS2 but its been difficult as information is spread out in bits so I figured I'd ask here to get some recommendations from you smart fellas. I know a few issues such as the 15kHz VGA, unnecessary black borders on screens, most games only being able to support 480i iirc etc.

So I want a 5" screen similar to that in a Vita but want to know what the best setup is to have the cleanest video output without black borders, and as power efficient as possible etc. Thank you in advance!

If you want the absolute best video quality, lowest power consumption, and perfect compatibility across all games, then a Retro GEM Shiny is the answer: Using Retro GEM Shiny as an LCD Driver

But it's not cheap, and is challenging to wire up.

Other options:

• MST703-based driver board that supports 15kHz VGA
  • Drew goes over this one in his VS2 worklog. It needed some mods to work with a 40p 800x480 panel
  • This one might also work, but 15kHz support is not guaranteed
  • The ZJ050NA-08C LCD with black KYV driver board supports 15kHz, but is 640x480, not 800x480
  • Black borders are basically a given with all of these...
• PCB800099 RTD266x-based driver board with 15kHz YPbPr support
  • Apparently some of these support 15kHz. The 7" Eyoyo LCD driver board also did, but it's no longer readily available
  • PCB800099 has a 50p ZIF, so you would need to adapt the 50p ZIF to 40p for a 5" 800x480 LCD
  • Al3x used one with a 7" 50p 800x480 LCD in his APS2
• Shinobi Scaler(GBS Control)
  • Linedoubles 15kHz sources to 480p, laglessly (bob deinterlacing) or with 1f of delay (motion adaptive deinterlacing)
  • You can set it to integer scale, stretch stuff out to fill the screen with no black bars... whatever you want, really
  • Shinobi Scaler 2 is a work in progress and will halve the power consumption to ~1W, making it more usable for portables
  • You can see how it looks in my PS Hanami thread
• Retrotink (official + clones), RAD2X
  • Retrotink-2X and RAD2X products are lagless RGBS->HDMI converters that only do linedoubling. They will have black bars on content that's not exactly 240p tall, as seen here
  • You can get clones of the original Retrotink for ~$40 on AliExpress
  • Here's a thread with details about the generic Retrotink
• Various generic RGB/YPbPr-to-HDMI converters
  • aka Wii2HDMI, Kaico PS2HDMI, Pound PS2 HD LINK
  • These linedouble RGB or YPbPr to 480p HDMI with varying results. Some are noisy, don't scale the image properly, or add lag. Others look OK!
  • Nold used a PS2HDMI in his PS2DMG
  • Al3x used a Pound PS2 HDMI converter in his PS2GO!
  • ABH used one in PS2B, with a Wisecoco 5.5" 1920x1080 LCD
  • ElectronAnalog module

There are some other options, like Shank's LumaDoub, that aren't ready yet. For now these are your only choices.
