3D printing is all the rage in today’s quickly advancing world. Modder Protobug is here today to show us just how smoothly new and old can go together.
GameCube portables are nothing new. We’ve seen units from modder Ashen go as small as they can possibly go but 3D printing your case is a new technique that several console modders have been using over the past few months. Protobug’s latest unit which he as named the Protocube uses the wonderful concept of 3D printing to create a perfect case.
One might notice that in the pictures of the unit there is no place to insert a game disc. The GameCube modding community found that if you use a Wii mod chip designed to play games off of an SD card, it works for the GameCube as well. Part of that is attributed to the fact that the Wii is only an overclocked GameCube with motion controls, but we’ll leave that discussion for another time.
The unit features a 5″ screen along with internal batteries so that you can play GameCube on the go.
If you’d like to learn more about drive replacements for the GameCube or even create your own portable system, there are several guides on the BitBuilt forums and Console Modding Wiki.
