It is normal for an LCD to get warm but it shouldn't get too hot.

So what part of the LCD is actually getting hot? Have you taken it apart yet?

If you haven't taken it apart I suggest looking at the components coming in from the power jack. More than likely it's using a 7805 or 7808 regulator to step down the 12 volts. I'm basing this assumption off of the fact that the dropout is 7.5v.

These linear regulators burn off the voltage as heat, so they will get hot if you put a high voltage in.
